Iran and the Plastic Surgery Craze
In 2005 and 2007 articles were written and videos posted online about the noticeably large number of plastic surgeries, especially nose operations, performed in Iran. These types of articles have become scarce since 2008 despite the fact that plastic surgery is still very prevalent in the country.
In 2007 Mehrdan Oskovei in his 50-minute documentary Nose: Iranian Style explores the reasons for which young men and women have nose jobs in Iran. Many articles and videos that I watched on the internet state that nose jobs are a status symbol and one video showed that young men and women had plastic surgery to look more like Western movie stars. I believe that the plastic surgery craze in Iran is most likely a sign that the culture is in a state of crisis.
