Iran Us Academic Collaborations

What is the biggest challenge facing Iranians in the current era? Is it the disintegration of our nation thanks to separatists such as the Azerbaijani Turks of the north, the Iranian-Arabs of Ahwaz and Abadan, or the Kurds of the western borders? Is it the lack of production and international distribution of Iranian products? Is it the fact that a large percentage of Iranians have had to flee the country because of their religious or political beliefs?

Davood N. Rahni has recently written an article and expressed his enthusiasm about the arrival of six American university presidents to Iran to discuss academic communications between the two countries. I am puzzled at the reasons for Davood’s enthusiasm. It is great to know that Iranians may be given the opportunity to profit from such an exchange, yet one has to wonder which Iranians will be included in the pool of students given this chance. Let us not forget that forty percent of those being accepted in universities in Iran are being given a privileged status because they have lost a loved-one during the Iran-Iraq war.

I respect the fact that Iranians want Iran to become a better country, but let us not forget our lessons of the past. The people of Iran were also excited when they revolted against the Shah and brought Khomeini to power. So it is always dangerous not to be cautious about carefully considering what is really best for Iran and Iranians.
